I think...

...that this is harder than it looked. Hmm. I remember watching the trailer for Xillia (before it was officially announced for release here, even, I think) and really expecting a whole awful lot...and looking back, as much as I love the game to death, it didn't deliver entirely. Boo to me for having expectations based on the trailer, yep, and I didn't even think about how what I expected and what I got were really different until a few days ago. That said, I am probably voting for Xillia because it felt fresh, still. Some things were surprising and veered around the Tales-of formula more than most do.

SECOND PLACE goes to Vesperia - the big fandom joke that it has no plot aside - because of the humanness of it, I think. Yuri has brain cells is just your average guy, in some really human respects, who stuff happens to and for a while he gets dragged along through it; the decisions he makes, when he takes the action into his own hands, are often morally reprehensible and kind of "you're supposed to be the hero character...right?" and so even if the plot isn't entirely, er, glued together, you see it more like a series of life events...some of which the person living the life doesn't have a whole lot of control or choice over.
