Artes Prejoin: Day 7

Hello hello, it's Chuu again and this is now day 7 of the prejoin event /o/ Topic?

TV tropes!

If you have no idea what tropes are, feel free to check them out here, look at the Tales page and find out!

As a series franchise, there are elements within the variety of Tales games that are consistent and you'll notice them with each game that is out! Of course there are lots of notable differences between each since different verses and all, but what exactly what makes them all considered Tales games? Name at least one of your favorites and explain why and you'll get 1 random card and 1 random gel. c: This game, like all games, will close when the game officially opens!

deconstructing 'Black and White Morality' is my absolute fav Tales trope for the most part. is there a bad guy?? is there good guys?? NO EVERYTHING IS GREY. THE BAD GUY WANTS TO SAVE THE WORLD ACTUALLY AND SO DO THE GOOD GUYS BUT THEY BOTH HAVE DIFFERENT IDEAS OF DOING SO.

also 'Beach Episode'. always beach episode.

Say My Name, because, well... this. And this too.

For a more serious answer, Duel Boss. Because they tend to follow and be followed by really great moments with great music and sorta pumped up feeling. Tales of the Abyss has my favourite (Meaning of Birth kyaaaa).

"Plots that start as Cliche Storms but later go on to subvert and deconstruct the very tropes they employ, often by drastically highlighting the nasty downsides of them" - pretty much sums up my love of Tales. They take very broad concepts and yet pull them together in interesting new ways every time. Also, I just love the tone of the games in general. They deal with dark, depressing, and serious issues, but the overall atmosphere still ends up upbeat and quirky. I vastly prefer this over games that take themselves too seriously.

Friendship Moment has to be my favorite, I think, because I just love friendships ;w;

Also seconding deconstructing black and white morality, because I really like the fact that there's usually no one set bad guy or one set good guy.

Shoutouts are very fun, too, even if you don't understand the series the shout outs come from! And I like that they shout out to other Tales of games as well.

"Friendship Moment", "Nakama", "Well-Intentioned Extremist"

I like all of these because, well, the first two are about friendship and that makes me happy! But then the last one kind of relates to a lot of the villains - ALL OF THEM ARE WELL-INTENTIONED somewhere kind of deep inside the entire mess of villainy - and they obviously think they're helping and it's a nice breather from the usual THEY ARE DEFINITELY BAD AND THEY JUST WANT TO BE EVIL BECAUSE THEY CAN though I guess we do have some villains like Saleh but Saleh is kind of nuts so.

Jumping on the deconstruction train, because it's a great trope that doesn't get old. Deconstructing morality is a good one that some of us have mentioned already, where we have grey morals and well-intentioned extremists and other things that make the Tales antagonists more than "just another villain" (if you can even consider them villains), but a lot of other things get deconstructed too. A lot of Tales is taking something you (or the characters) thought was awesome or positive and then telling you that no, it's actually terrible and you should feel bad that you ever thought the opposite. So then you end up with a conflict between how something needs to change, but usually it's so integrated into the setting that said change won't be easy.

Also Say My Name because what's Tales without yelling

Oh man I'll have to agree with the deconstructing black and white morality. I love that a lot of Tales villains are just well-intentioned extremists. It makes them really interesting and gives the stories a lot of depth!

Also nakama is my favorite trope in any series, and it goes double for Tales because I love that your parties basically become nakamas. FRIENDSHIPS AND FAMILIES ;w;

Summon Magic is one of my favorites because the associated characters and spirits are always so awesome, and I love colorful sidequests; the commandant as a warning sign of trouble is another one I chuckle at. It's so true.

GAME CHANGING PLOT TWIST is probably my favorite applicable one because by the time it happens you're like OH DAMNNNNN I GOTTA KEEP PLAYING WITHOUT STOPPING FOR DAYS NOW.

Also Well Intentioned Extremist (Van is my favorite villain and this is definitely his trope). Those types of villains are often more compelling to me than other types are.

Shout Out is without a doubt one of my most favorite tropes because of all the little ways new tales games will throw back to old tales games. And finding/recognizing them fills me with a really dumb glee.

Also Lethal Chef because I... I really enjoy dumb cooking things (Xillia why did you take away cooking why).

I will nth everyone who likes the shoutouts. I like seeing elements from previous games incorporated and improved on, whether it's the costumes to the battle system or otherwise. I also like seeing characters come back or be revised. I also have always liked the ~dual worlds~ system, since I like opposite worlds of each other.

Also Tales games need more yanderes /hit with a brick

Very Definitely Final Dungeon, mainly because I love the ridiculous bonus dungeons. ESPECIALLY GRACES'....

I like the character tropes! I won't look them up because I'm too lazy, but I love how there's always a young kid (Genis, Karol, Presea, Anise, Elize, etc.) and a veteran guy (Regal, Raven, Ricardo, Rowen, Jade). I think it's fun to expect them and compare them, idk. I also like shout-out.

As I mentioned on the favorite character one, I'm a huge sucker for the whole idiot hero thing whoops.... I also really like the fancy outfits! I don't care if it's not reasonable to fight in that pretty coat, it's a damn nice coat!

I cannot stand TV Tropes, but let me see what I can agree with here! I do like how Tales games tend to have unclear black/white values but rather a gradient of greys, and I appreciate that all antagonists are antagonists rather than cartoonish villains. I also tend to enjoy their exploration of general racism more than in other RPGs. :|a

In terms of features in the games I like that seem to be classified as tropes, I enjoy Summon Spirits, Mystic Artes, Devil's Arms andddddd Skits.

Kicking Ass in All Her Finery is one of my favorites because I freaking love putting my characters in dumb costumes while they fight and otherwise go on about their days with the utmost of seriousness, hardly even noticing that they are wearing swimsuits in the middle of a glacier or are wearing cat ears to the final battle! 8D

this is totally not because I secretly wish I could wander around in frilly dresses and other ridiculous outfits while doing impractical things ok

I'm very character focused and I love most of the Face Heel Turn characters or more specifically the Heel-Face Revolving Door ones like Kratos, Yeager and Alvin who are just shady forever HAHA they are great and I love simultaneously hating and loving them. BEING LAWFUL GOOD IS BORING give me more of a grey area.

Also all the Badass Grandpas YEAHHHH holler.

[personal profile] gammacrank 2014-01-23 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Save Both Worlds is one of my favourite Tales tropes! I love that the answer comes down to finding a way for different worlds to coexist rather than prioritizing one over the other. Also Combat Medic; it's a lot of fun to be able to play a magic character who can do both defense and offense. I really love the costumes and shoutouts, as well, not only to other Tales games but also to other Namco games.

ALRIGHT TV TROPES, LET'S HAVE A LOOK AT THIS

I suppose I sort of like Corrupt Church as a trope, although I'm really hoping that Zesteria might give religion a break for a change! Religious organisations do tend to get kinda unkind treatment in Tales games! But even so I do like seeing how these organisations work from game to game, and how the politics and religious aspects interact. Abyss and Symphonia are both really good for this - and to be fair, the religious/spiritual aspects of Abyss are quite even-handed, it's definitely one of my favourite aspects of the game.

Oh, I like the Lethal Chef/Supreme Chef stuff as well, hahaha, I love the attention to cooking in general! There was a fantastic compilation post on tumblr recently that went into great detail about all the different cooking styles of all the Symphonia characters, based on which ingredients they would tend to favour and which recipes they would excel in and such, and those sorts of details just make the respective casts that much more realistic and enjoyable. It's just such a great layer to the world, it really makes them exist outside of the main storyline, you know? SO YEAH, COOKING TROPE, GOOD.

Oh yeah, and no trope name for this, but I do approve of the badly drawn wanted posters, hahaha.

I have to go with Black and White Morality as well. I think having characters that aren't so fixed to a certain side (good or bad) is more realistic and can really draw me to a game because it's not just they're pure evil it's they're evil because grandma needs help (or something like that). It allows the antagonists to be human as well.

Agreeing with a lot of people about the grey morality thing. I can't remember the trope name but Mithos was an incredible character for me at such a young age, when I first played Symphonia. The issues about discrimination resonated with me so that Symphonia will always have a personal importance in my heart. I also like the nakama thing so I always get attached to the whole party, just adventuring across the land with everyone is really fun~ Tales of games haven't disappointed me in terms of fleshing out their characters so far though I've only played 2 and a half Tales so that isn't hard to do.
